2026 Comparison · Airline Comparison

Qatar AirwaysvsEtihad Airways

Qatar Airways wins on the business class seat and program flexibility. Qsuite remains the benchmark business class product in the world and swept the top three Skytrax 2025 categories — World's Best Business Class Airline, Best Business Class Seat, and Best Business Class Lounge. Qatar Privilege Club runs on Avios, the shared currency of British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, and Finnair, which gives you four other programs to pool points from for a single Qsuite redemption. No fuel surcharges on award tickets. Etihad wins on the top-end suite and connection comfort. The Residence on the A380 is still the only three-room private suite in commercial aviation, and the First Apartment is widely considered the most spacious first class seat in the sky. Etihad's Abu Dhabi hub is built around quick connections (Terminal A is the fastest connection in the Gulf), and Etihad Guest unlocks unique value via American AAdvantage and JetBlue.

Every cabin, compared

Pricing benchmarks reflect mid-April 2026 published cash fares, one-way New York to each hub. Round-trips typically run 70–80% of two one-ways.

Economy· $600 to $1,100 one-way (NYC → Hub)

Both airlines run a calmer, more design-led economy product than the louder Gulf alternatives. Pitch and width are within an inch of each other. Etihad is slightly tighter on width; Qatar runs slightly tighter on pitch.

  • Dine-anytime concept; menus blend Emirati and international
  • Complimentary Dubai-to-Abu Dhabi coach transfer for ticket holders
Premium Economy· Neither airline offers it

Unlike Emirates, neither Qatar Airways nor Etihad operates a true premium economy cabin. Qatar's closest equivalent is a discounted Business "Promo" fare on shorter routes, which still puts you in a lie-flat seat. Etihad's Economy Space rows offer extra legroom only - not a true PE product. If premium economy matters to you, neither of these is the right airline.

Qatar Airways logo
Qatar AirwaysNo true premium economy
  • Closest equivalent is discounted Business "Promo" fare on shorter routes
  • Still lie-flat seat, not a separate premium economy cabin
Etihad logo

Business Class· $4,000 to $6,500 one-way

The most consequential cabin comparison. Qatar Airways' Qsuite has been the industry benchmark since 2017 — closing doors, the Quad configuration for four passengers to share space, and double beds for couples. Etihad takes the opposite approach: every long-haul business seat is private, modern, and sleep-led, with no version of the older 2-2-2 seats that still plague some Emirates aircraft. Both deliver dine-on-demand and high-end amenity kits.

Qatar Airways logo
Qatar AirwaysQsuite is still the seat to beat
  • Closing door on every Qsuite seat with a Do Not Disturb indicator
  • Quad configuration: four center seats open into a shared dining or meeting space
  • Two center seats convert into a double bed for couples
  • Available on A350-1000, A350-900, 777-300ER, and 777-200LR (not on A380)
  • Diptyque amenity kits; The White Company sleepwear on long-haul
  • Note: Qatar's A380 business class uses an older non-Qsuite product
Etihad logo
EtihadBusiness Studio: privacy plus polish
  • Every long-haul business seat: direct aisle access, lie-flat, sliding privacy door on A350
  • A350: Business Studio with a sliding door, large screen, refined storage
  • 787: refreshed cabins with Bluetooth pairing and wireless charging
  • Memory foam mattresses on longer flights, dine-anytime
  • Acqua di Parma amenity kits
  • A380: 70 Business Studios on the upper deck with access to "The Lobby" lounge area
First Class· $4,500 to $32,000+ return

Two of the most aspirational first class products in the sky, with completely different briefs. Qatar runs a small, intimate eight-seat cabin only on its A380s. Etihad operates the biggest first class seats in the world — and the only three-room private suite ever fitted to a commercial airliner.

  • Al Safwa First Lounge in Doha: private bedrooms, spa, à la carte dining — widely considered the best airline lounge in the world

  • Available only on the five A380 routes: London Heathrow, Paris CDG, Singapore Changi, Toronto Pearson (YYZ), and Tokyo Narita (NRT) from June 17, 2026
  • The Residence pricing: $24,000–$32,000+ one-way

Best miles redemptions

The standout award redemptions on each carrier — where the same flight costs a fraction of the cash price.

Qatar Airways
Qatar Avios: JFK → DOH Qsuite (off-peak)
70,000 Avios

Qsuite from New York to Doha off-peak costs 70,000 Avios one-way — one of the lowest-cost paths to the world's best business class seat. No fuel surcharges. Peak Saver rises to about 94,500 Avios.

Qatar Airways
Qatar Avios: Short-haul partner flights
6,000 Avios

Qatar's partner chart prices short flights under 650 miles from just 6,000 Avios in economy and 20,000 in business — applicable on oneworld partners including American, British Airways, and Cathay Pacific. One of the cheapest short-haul awards anywhere.

Etihad
Etihad via AAdvantage: YYZ → AUH First Apartment
115,000 AAdvantage miles

American AAdvantage books Etihad First Apartments at 115,000 miles one-way from North America to Abu Dhabi, with no fuel surcharges. With JFK A380 service ended in June 2025, Toronto Pearson is now the only North American gateway for this redemption.

Etihad
Etihad Guest: JetBlue Mint redemption
40,000 Etihad Guest miles

JetBlue Mint US East Coast to the Caribbean prices at just 40,000 Etihad Guest miles — well below JetBlue TrueBlue's own dynamic pricing on the same seat. One of the most under-the-radar uses of Etihad Guest miles.

When to Fly

Climate-aware travel planning

Doha and Abu Dhabi sit in nearly identical desert climates separated by about 350 miles of Persian Gulf coastline. Both swing 40%+ in cash fares between peak and off-season, and award availability moves with them. Doha gets occasional springtime thunderstorms (a local phenomenon called Al Sarayat) that Abu Dhabi sees less of.

Peak Season

November to March

15–25°C / 59–77°F

Cool, dry, low humidity. Highest cash fares; tightest award availability. Book six to eight months ahead. Doha's National Day on December 18 anchors the winter calendar; Abu Dhabi hosts the Formula 1 Grand Prix in early December. Best for outdoor sightseeing, the Doha Corniche, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and desert excursions.

Shoulder

April and October

25–35°C / 77–95°F

Warm and manageable. Mid-tier fares and better award availability open up across both carriers. Sea temperatures peak around 28°C in October. Watch for occasional Al Sarayat thunderstorms around Doha in April; both hubs see brief dust events.

Shoulder

May and September

33–40°C / 91–104°F

Hot, rising humidity. Discounted fares and more business class award seats. Best for indoor-led itineraries — the Museum of Islamic Art and National Museum of Qatar in Doha, Louvre Abu Dhabi and Yas Island in the UAE, or pure stopover travel.

Off-Season

June to August

40–48°C / 104–118°F

Extreme heat and humidity. Lowest fares of the year across both carriers and the broadest award availability. June 16, 2026 brings Qatar's A380 service back on DOH-LHR and DOH-BKK; Etihad's A380 expansion to Tokyo Narita starts June 17. Both carriers tend to release more premium award seats in the summer trough.

Qatar Airways seasonal tip

Qatar Airways will run A380 First Class on only two routes (London and Bangkok) from June through mid-September 2026, with Paris, Singapore, and Sydney returning September 16. If you want the upper-deck A380 first class product, target those specific routes and book ahead.

Etihad Airways seasonal tip

Etihad's biggest A380 update in years is the Tokyo Narita launch on June 17, 2026 — giving Asian travelers access to First Apartments and The Residence for the first time on that route. Capacity nearly doubles from the A350 it replaces.
