The problem appears immediately: United MileagePlus is not an American Express transfer partner. That does not mean you cannot use Amex points to United flights.

United belongs to Star Alliance, which gives you several indirect booking options. Instead of transferring Membership Rewards points into MileagePlus, you can transfer them to another Star Alliance program and use that program’s miles to book an eligible United-operated award seat.

The most useful choices include Air Canada Aeroplan, Avianca LifeMiles, ANA Mileage Club and Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer. The important question is therefore not, “How do I transfer Amex points to United?”

It is, “Which Amex transfer partner should I use to book this particular United flight?”

Can You Transfer Amex Points Directly to United?

No. United MileagePlus is not listed among the current U.S. American Express Membership Rewards airline transfer partners. Amex currently offers airline partners including Air Canada Aeroplan, ANA Mileage Club and Avianca LifeMiles, among others, but not United MileagePlus.

So there is no direct: Amex Membership Rewards → United MileagePlus transfer path. Instead, the useful route looks like:

Amex Membership Rewards → Star Alliance partner program → United-operated award

This works because United makes certain award seats available to its alliance partners. However, partner award inventory is not the same as everything you see when searching with United MileagePlus. United can make additional awards available to its own members while offering fewer seats to partner programs.

Before doing anything with your points, read the Flightpoints guide on how to search United award flights. It explains how United award availability works and why cash seats and partner award seats are not the same thing.

<meta The same United seat can cost a different number of points through different loyalty programs, and a seat available through one program may occasionally fail to appear through another. That makes comparison more important than loyalty to a single transfer partner.

Option 1: Book United With Air Canada Aeroplan

Aeroplan is one of the easiest programs to consider first. American Express Membership Rewards points transfer to Aeroplan at a standard 1:1 ratio for eligible U.S. accounts. Air Canada confirms that 1,000 Membership Rewards points convert to 1,000 Aeroplan points.

United is one of Aeroplan’s “select partners” under its current reward chart. Aeroplan pricing considers the distance flown, and current United-operated awards can fall under starting and variable pricing ranges rather than one universal mileage rate. The latest Aeroplan reward chart specifically lists United among its select partners and notes that partner fees, taxes and other charges may apply.

Aeroplan can therefore be particularly useful when:

You find United award space available to partners.

The Aeroplan price is lower than United’s MileagePlus price.

Your itinerary contains other Star Alliance airlines.

You already have some Aeroplan points and only need to top up the balance.

Do not transfer first and search afterward. American Express and Air Canada both advise checking award availability before completing a transfer.

Option 2: Use Avianca LifeMiles

LifeMiles is another important route for turning Amex points to United award travel. American Express currently transfers U.S. Membership Rewards points to Avianca LifeMiles at 1:1.

Avianca confirms that LifeMiles members can redeem miles for flights operated by partner airlines, with available itineraries and mileage requirements shown through its flight search. Because Avianca and United are both Star Alliance members, eligible United-operated partner award space can be booked through LifeMiles. This option becomes interesting when United’s own MileagePlus price is high but partner award inventory is available.

Suppose United dynamically prices a flight at a high MileagePlus amount. That does not necessarily mean LifeMiles will charge the same amount. The two loyalty programs have separate redemption systems.

Flightpoints already has a full guide on transferring Amex points to LifeMiles. Use that guide once you have decided LifeMiles is the best program for your particular United award. The more important step is comparing LifeMiles against Aeroplan before transferring anything.

            Transfer Bonus Tracker

Compare airline and hotel transfer partners, ratios, transfer times, and live bonus status.

        View Tracker

Option 3: Book United Through ANA Mileage Club

ANA Mileage Club is another Amex transfer partner that can access United awards. Amex currently lists ANA at 1,000 Membership Rewards points to 1,000 ANA Mileage Club miles for eligible U.S. accounts. ANA also lists United Airlines among the Star Alliance carriers eligible for partner Flight Awards.

One major ANA change is especially relevant to newer guides. Partner awards were historically associated heavily with round-trip booking rules, but ANA introduced one-way partner awards for reservations and tickets issued from June 24, 2025 onward. ANA says partner awards now start from 7,500 miles one way, with requirements determined by zones and cabin.

That makes ANA more flexible for travelers who only need one direction.

ANA may be worth checking for:

United long-haul flights.

Star Alliance itineraries involving multiple carriers.

Routes where ANA’s zone-based pricing compares favorably with another program.

However, do not choose ANA merely because an old award-chart article shows an attractive mileage figure. Confirm the current chart, routing rules and actual seat availability first.

Option 4: Use Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer

Singapore KrisFlyer provides another route to United award flights. KrisFlyer allows members to redeem miles for Star Alliance airline awards, and Singapore Airlines publishes a separate Star Alliance award chart.

The current chart also allows one-way Star Alliance awards, generally priced at half the corresponding round-trip mileage amount. Taxes, fees and applicable surcharges are additional.

KrisFlyer can therefore be worth adding to your comparison when Aeroplan, LifeMiles and ANA do not produce the result you want.

Singapore says Star Alliance partner awards are increasingly bookable online. If your required origin or destination cannot be selected digitally, KrisFlyer Membership Services or a reservation request may be necessary. That makes KrisFlyer less of a first-choice search for some simple United trips, but it remains a useful backup option.

            🔔

Be First to Know When Award Seats Open

Create an Instant Alert and receive a notification the moment your preferred award flight becomes available.

        Create Alert

Why Doesn’t the United MileagePlus Price Tell You What You Will Pay?

This is one of the most important parts of using Amex points to United flights. United does not publish one fixed award chart covering every MileagePlus redemption. Its award pricing can vary significantly by date, route, cabin and availability. Flightpoints’ current analysis of MileagePlus sweet spots explains why you should treat United’s displayed mileage price as a live quote rather than a permanent rate.

But Aeroplan, LifeMiles, ANA and KrisFlyer are not simply copying United’s MileagePlus price. They are issuing their own award ticket using their own loyalty currency.

Imagine a United flight displaying:

One price through MileagePlus.

A different price through Aeroplan.

Another requirement through ANA.

That can happen because the programs use different award-pricing systems. The catch is availability. A United seat must be released to the relevant partner before you can book it through that partner’s miles. Seeing a United flight available for 50,000 MileagePlus miles does not prove that Aeroplan or LifeMiles can book it.

The Best Way to Search Before Transferring Amex Points

Rather than opening four loyalty-program websites and repeating the same search, begin with Flightpoints. Flightpoints award search compares award options across multiple loyalty programs and can help identify which programs currently show seats for your route.

Use this workflow:

Search your origin, destination and dates.

Look specifically for the United-operated flight you want.

Compare programs that can receive Amex points.

Note the mileage requirement and cash charges.

Confirm the seat directly with the loyalty program.

Transfer only the points required.

Complete the booking immediately after the transfer arrives.

That final confirmation matters. Airline award inventory changes continuously, and points moved from Amex into an airline account generally cannot simply be returned because the award disappeared.

Use the Flightpoints CPP Calculator to compare the points you are spending with the cash price of the ticket.

Know the True Value of Your Miles

Before redeeming your points, calculate your Cents Per Point (CPP) in seconds and instantly see whether you’re getting excellent value.

            Calculate Your CPP

Compare the Actual Value Before Booking

Finding a partner award is not enough. You should also decide whether using points makes sense. For example, spending 25,000 transferable points on a United ticket selling for $180 could be far less attractive than preserving those points for a costly international flight.

Enter the cash price, award mileage and taxes into the Flightpoints Points Value Calculator. This comparison is particularly useful for inexpensive domestic United flights.

            Points or Cash Calculator

Find out whether using points or paying cash gives you better value. Rather than transferring points to an airline loyalty program, you can use eligible Membership Rewards points toward flights booked through American Express Travel.

This is fundamentally different from a partner award. You are effectively using Amex points toward a commercially available ticket rather than transferring them into MileagePlus or another Star Alliance program.

The advantage is availability. If a United cash fare is available through Amex Travel, you do not need United to release a partner award seat. The disadvantage is that transferring Membership Rewards to a partner can sometimes produce better value, especially for expensive premium-cabin tickets.

Flightpoints already covers this broader decision in its guide to booking flights with credit card points and miles. For this United-specific strategy, check the partner award first. Use Amex Travel as an alternative when partner inventory is unavailable or the cash fare makes more sense.

Everything You Need for Award Travel

Explore loyalty programs or instantly search award availability across airlines.

            Explore

            Search

Common Mistakes When Using Amex Points for United

The biggest mistake is trying to transfer Membership Rewards directly to MileagePlus. That option does not exist. Another is transferring to Aeroplan or LifeMiles simply because you expect a United seat to be available.

Always search first. Also avoid comparing mileage numbers without fees. A slightly cheaper award can become less attractive once partner booking charges or other cash costs are included.

Finally, do not ignore the cash fare. A good airline-transfer strategy still produces a poor redemption when the ticket itself is inexpensive. Keep your Membership Rewards points with Amex until you know exactly which program you need.

Conclusion

You cannot directly transfer Amex points to United MileagePlus, but you can still use Amex points to United flights through Star Alliance partners. Start with Aeroplan and LifeMiles, then compare ANA Mileage Club and Singapore KrisFlyer where relevant. Each program can access eligible United partner awards, but its mileage requirements and booking rules can differ.

The best strategy is not to select one transfer partner permanently. Search the exact United flight first, compare the programs that can book it, calculate the redemption value, and only then move your Membership Rewards points.

Use Flightpoints to compare award availability, then verify the seat with the airline program before transferring. That turns the lack of a direct Amex-to-United transfer into an advantage: instead of being locked into MileagePlus pricing, you can choose the Star Alliance program offering the better deal.

            💎 Flightpoints Pro

Discover the True Value of Your Points

Ready to see what your points are really worth?

                Get Flightpoints Pro

and find the cheapest award seat across every program in seconds.

            Get Flightpoints Pro

FAQs

Q. Can I transfer Amex points to United MileagePlus?
A: No. United MileagePlus is not currently a U.S. American Express Membership Rewards transfer partner. Programs such as Aeroplan, ANA Mileage Club and LifeMiles are available instead.

Q. How can I use Amex points to United flights?
A: Transfer Membership Rewards points to an eligible Star Alliance program such as Aeroplan, LifeMiles, ANA Mileage Club or KrisFlyer, then book United-operated partner award space through that program.

Q. Is Aeroplan or LifeMiles better for United flights?
A: Neither is always better. Compare the mileage requirement, taxes, fees and availability for your exact flight before transferring. Aeroplan currently treats United as a select partner, while LifeMiles also allows eligible partner-airline redemptions.

Q. Can ANA miles book United flights one way?
A: Yes. ANA introduced one-way partner awards for reservations and tickets issued from June 24, 2025 onward. United is an eligible Star Alliance partner.

Q. Will every United award appear through Aeroplan or LifeMiles?
A: No. United can make award inventory available to MileagePlus members without releasing the same seat to partners. Confirm partner availability before transferring Amex points.

Q. Should I transfer Amex points before searching for United flights?
A: No. Find the award first, verify the price and availability through the program you intend to use, and then transfer only the amount needed. Membership Rewards airline transfers should generally be treated as final.

Amex Points to United at a Glance You have Amex Membership Rewards points and want to fly United.…
[514
688,122,16,134,154,694
post-4933","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-transfer-guides","tag-amex-points","tag-award-flight-search","tag-flightpoints","tag-miles-points","tag-points","tag-united-flights","cs-entry
["GET
